High Yield Savings Accounts

From Phinvestopedia

High Yield Savings Accounts (HYSAs) are deposit accounts that offer significantly higher interest rates than the industry standard. While traditional banks in the Philippines typically offer a base interest rate of 0.0625% to 0.125% per annum, HYSAs currently offer rates ranging from 2.50% to 15.00% per annum.

In the Philippines, HYSAs are primarily offered by Digital Banks licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). These banks can afford to pay higher rates because they do not have the massive overhead costs of maintaining physical branches and thousands of tellers.

The Math: Why It Matters

To illustrate the difference, consider a deposit of ₱100,000 held for one year (before 20% tax):

Bank Type Interest Rate Annual Earnings (Gross)
Traditional Bank (Payroll) 0.125% ₱125.00
High Yield Savings Account 5.00% ₱5,000.00
  • Result: By simply moving the money, the depositor earns 40 times more without taking any additional risk.

The market is competitive, with rates changing frequently to attract users.

Pros and Cons

Feature Pros Cons
Returns High Interest. Beats inflation better than keeping cash under the mattress. Variable Rates. Banks can lower the interest rate at any time with notice.
Convenience Daily Crediting. Seeing daily interest motivates saving. Transfer Fees. Moving money *out* to other banks often costs ₱15-₱25 after free transfer limits are used.
Safety PDIC Insured. Like big banks, deposits are insured up to ₱500,000. Customer Service. No physical branch to storm into if you have a problem. You rely on Chat Support or Email.
Access 24/7. Open and close accounts anytime. System Downtime. If the app is under maintenance, you cannot access your funds instantly.

Strategies for Savers

  • The "Emergency Fund" Home: Because HYSAs are liquid (you can withdraw anytime), they are the perfect place to store your Emergency Fund. It earns money while waiting for an emergency.
  • The "Digital Envelope" System: Use different banks for different goals.
    • *SeaBank* for Daily Expenses (due to free transfers).
    • *GoTyme* for Travel Fund.
    • *Maya* for Bills Payment.
  • Check the Limits: Some banks only offer high interest on the first ₱100,000 or ₱500,000. If you have more, split your money across multiple digital banks to maximize the rates.
